SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the Csrss.exe process uses more memory over time. When the Csrss.exe process uses about 2 gigabytes (GB) of memory, other processes may not start.

For example, this problem may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • The computer is running Microsoft SQL Server.
  • The xp_cmdshell extended stored procedure is running in a user account that was configured by using the xp_sqlagent_proxy_account extended stored procedure.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because memory is allocated to the Csrss.exe process every time that the Cmd.exe process is started in a desktop. However, when the desktop object is closed, the allocated memory is not freed.
